(Reaching Ceibal (sometimes spelled "Seibal") required a half-day river journey from a small frontier town along the Rio Passion deep into Guatemala's Peten district. Replete with crocodiles and turtles, the river served as our entrance to the deep rain forest. Once near the ruin we trekked through the muddy underbrush to this mysterious and magical ruin. Many backcountry sculptures and human sacrifice slabs were present at the site. This is an example of the front of just such a sacrifice slab!)
